Seafood and shipping containers… It seems like the natural fit, doesn’t it? After all, both are pretty at home on the big drip – for most of their lives anyway. And once they become landlubbers, they’re still more useful than a fish that flies
Pop over to the Newcastle area and you might, if you’re feeling peckish, discover the delights of Riley’s Fish Shack. It’s a seafood restaurant started by young entrepreneur, Adam Riley, located by King Edward’s Bay in Tynemouth.
But Riley’s got bigger ideas for his seafood shack. Speaking about his plans, Riley said: ‘The Fish Shack was so busy last summer, we were inundated. This is about giving our customers something new. I’d been thinking for some time about building the business and having seen available shops – I’d toyed with the idea of settling down.’
And what’s his big idea? Like all sensible folk, Adam Riley sees the virtue of the shipping container conversion. I really like the idea of having a semi-permanent base,’ Riley said, ‘Which could potentially be transported to different sites. It could be moved up the coast to different beaches.’
To fund the transition from Fish Shack to the restaurant he’s dubbed ’The Tackle Box’, Riley’s looking to crowdfund his way to success. Looking to get £20,000, potential online investors can get all manner of rewards for donating the dollar, depending on the amount. These range from getting a lobster cooked for them or having Riley privately cater an event for them, right up to a lifetime’s supply of Fish Shack meals for those with the deepest pockets. So far, he’s managed to raise close to £3,000, with the final total being matched by private investors, according to Riley.
That, right there, is what makes container conversions perfect for these sorts of ventures. They’re relocatable, and affordable. Riley would probably need to earn a lot more than £20,000 if he were looking to built his own restaurant through traditional building methods.
