The Steel Container Revolution

Here at Flintham Cabins we are passionate about steel containers and are proud to be able to offer a great range of steel storage containers in London. Whilst our steel containers are typically used for a range of storage purposes, as mentioned in one of our previous blogs, recent years have also witnessed the beginnings of somewhat of a steel container revolution, with steel containers being used for increasingly unique and innovative proposes, from low-cost housing, to pop-up art installations. So here we take a look at some further alternative uses of shipping containers from around the globe.

The past few years have witnessed the rather unique emerging trend of shipping containers being converted into commercial premises, such as restaurants. For example the Wahaca restaurant located on London’s Southbank has a rather intriguing design and is in fact built from 8 recycled steel shipping containers, stacked into pairs to form a two story building. Interestingly each container has been furnished in a different style, using a variety of both new and reclaimed materials, and several artists were commissioned to decorate its walls and the structures surrounding it.

The 25hours hotel in HafenCity, Hamburg, is another exciting venture to have employed the use of shipping containers in its rather unique and eclectic design. The hotel is home to a whole host of seafaring paraphernalia, including a refurbished shipping container which serves as a conference room.

Recent years have also seen refurbished steel shipping containers converted into a variety of art installations and even pop-up theatres too. For example back in 2012 architects in Amsterdam undertook to create a large stage and theatre made from recycled shipping containers, in order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Amsterdam Over het IJ theatre festival. The containers were stacked horizontally in a chequer board style design and reportedly took only four days to build.

These are just a few examples of the innovative ways steel containers have been used for some rather unique and wonderful purposes.
