We’ve commented many times before on the different uses for shipping containers in a variety of different installations.
This time we’re going to focus solely on the topic of shipping container homes and take a look at some of the innovative installations that some people from around the world have come up with.
As leading providers of steel storage units in London, we want to show the world how versatile these containers can be; they are no longer simply for shipping goods overseas!
Guest House in your Back Yard
We’ve all been in a situation where family members invite themselves over to our homes when there is very little room to house them.
This can be combated easily with the installation of a guest house shipping container in your back garden. When fully furnished decorated, your guests will soon forget that they are in a shipping container and believe that they have the most luxurious room in the property.
If you are worried about the lack of light within the container, you can cut holes to install panes of glass to give the unit a more home-like feel as well as being able to wire electrical lighting into the unit and create a beautiful, illuminated extension of your home.
Self Sufficient Cabin in the Woods
A news article grabbed our attention back in August which showed the true potential of shipping container homes.
A Canadian man created his own self sufficient cabin the woods in which he lived in for two years on a plot of land which was owned by his family.
The storage unit is completely renovated inside, boasting a beautiful heated floor and tasteful decoration. There is also no need to be connected with any utility companies, as the electricity is powered by a huge solar panel system and the water was supplied by a neighbour.
The man, Jospeh Dupuis, was studying renewable energy research at Algonquin College in Ottawa and has described the project as a “giant science experiment” and that he wants to help build similar homes for young people who are dealing with debt and introduce more people to the benefits of solar energy.
Looking at the photographs, we wouldn’t mind living in a storage container like that!
Home on the Road
Why should caravans get all the fun when it comes to providing shelter while travelling on the road?
Shipping containers are designed to travel, so we think that they would make a fantastic, customisable alternative to the traditional caravan.
They can be cheaper and more adaptable than their currently mobile home rival, and they are much more reliable as an investment- you can update and change what you want without many constraints when it comes to the interior!
The possibilities are endless when it comes to what you can do with a shipping container. We love the thought of more people recycling these units, rather than leaving them to rust once their shipping days are over.
