One of the big changes we’ve seen with shipping containers is their conversion into a key part of the property market. Last time in this blog we looked at how homes are being created out of disused shipping containers, providing affordable homes at a time when the stock of houses is seriously depleted.
But it’s certainly not just housing developers who are recycling old containers. Only last week, in Ontario, Canada, hotel chain Days Inn unveiled their latest creation – a hotel made from 120 surplus shipping containers.
The hotel, situated in the beautifully-named town of Sioux Lookout, was designed and manufactured in partnership with Ladacor. President of the construction company Joseph Kiss believes it’s ‘the largest container-based hotel in North America.’ Ladacor felt it important to construct ‘a very high-quality project to meet the stringent standards of the Days Inn brand,’ and Kiss added that using containers to make the two storey, 60-room hotel was ‘an environmentally sustainable and progressive solution.’
It seems hotels are the latest in a long line of buildings to fall under the spell of the shipping container revolution. There’s a good reason for that – instead of the projected 2.5 years it would’ve taken to construct the Days Inn hotel using traditional building methods, the project was completed in just 13 months! That’s the beauty of using shipping containers as a form of modular, and frankly revolutionary, building. They’re quick to affordable, eco-friendly, and far easier to construct.
In China, they’ve built a luxury hotel in the heart of the countryside, comprising of 35 containers. Even Britain is getting in on the action, as it’s been revealed that a Chinese firm will invest in a Holiday Inn located next to London City Airport. The hotel itself will, once completed, have an astonishing 204 rooms – all from the humble shipping container.
