Around the globe in eighty shipping containers is something we know all too well at Flintham Cabins, as the typical journey of many goods in the modern world involves at least one shipping container. In our economy of fast shipping, it is important that these goods arrive in a speedy and safe manner. The more that can be shipped, then, the better for both businesses and consumers. The CSCL Globe – the largest shipping container ship in the world – is one way that this can be achieved.
Why is this huge ship such a testament to modern engineering and what could it be carrying upon its broad shoulders?
Under Construction – An Engineering Feat
Owned and operated by the China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL), this is the first of five ships that were created with the intention for fast shipping between Asian and European trade routes. At the time of her launch in November 2014, she was the largest container ship in the entire world. It has the maximum capacity of 19,000 containers. That’s a lot of shipping potential!
The ship was constructed by Hyundai Heavy Industries in a South Korean shipyard, superseding the previous largest container ship; the Mærsk’s Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller.
With a length of 1.312 feet and a weight of 187,541 GT, this is a ship that is the same size as many small towns. The size of the vessel means that thirty-one crew members are needed to run the ship, which is unusually large for a modern (non-military) vessel.
Visiting the UK
For the first time, this behemoth of a container ship has landed in the UK. The CSCL Globe harboured in the Port of Felixstowe on Wednesday 17th May 2017. Giving UK residents, for the first time, a chance to get up close and personal with this huge container ship.
19,000 Containers
With an astonishing capacity, there are many things that can be transported on this ship:
A whole fleet of cars!
The contents of 19,000 small apartments!
Millions of rubber duckies.
Building a house? If you use an average of 10 shipping containers to create your home, then this ship can carry it 1,900 times over!
If you need shipping containers to help build your office, house, hotel, or for a more conventional purpose such as shipping on the CSCL, then you can get in touch with us, and a member of our team can assist you in choosing the right containers for your needs.
