Regular readers of our blog will know that we always take a seriously keen interest in the world of shipping container conversions. After all, as suppliers of both storage containers and site cabins in London, it combines two of our specialties in one!
We thought we’d seen every possible use for converted containers. Hotels, houses, and even seafood shacks have all been conjured up with some conversion creativity. But the latest conversion on our container radar takes things even further.
Head over to the town of Sderot, in southern Israel, and you’ll find a student village which serves Sapir Academic College. So far, so normal, you’re thinking. And then you realise that the entire housing community, all three storeys of it, was built from shipping containers.
That in itself is an impressive feat. But what really sets the project apart from tons of other container conversions is the fact that all of the houses were constructed by 1000 students – even those who’ve never built anything outside of a Lego kit. In return for lower rents, the students are required to perform 500 hours of service in the community each year. Which is a pretty good deal – especially when student loans start running out!
The project to convert these disused containers into student digs was spear-headed by a major youth organisation, Ayalim, whose aim was to keep folks staying in the town even after their studies have been completed. More affordable housing is one way of making sure this hope is a success.
Work on the Sderot complex actually started in June of last year. However, it wasn’t until the end of December that the homes were ready. And while they may look like exactly what they are from the outside, take a trip inside the container homes, and you’ll find a bright room, filled with natural sunlight and all the mod-cons and furnishings a student would need.
With a worthy goal and the chance for students to rent a house without breaking the bank, we think this is one of the best uses of converted steel containers. And if you’re on the look-out for premium storage containers and solutions for site accommodation, we’ve got you covered.
